On April 20, 2017, at about 4:15 a.m., Clovis Police Department Dispatch received a telephone call from a subject who stated a person had been “shot” in the “back” at an apartment in the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard. Officers responded to the apartment where they found a 43 year old Hispanic male, lying on the floor unresponsive. Officers and ambulance crew of the Clovis Police Department began lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful, and the 43 year old male succumbed to his injury. This male subject has been identified as David Lopez (43 years of age) of Clovis, New Mexico.
During the initial call to the apartment complex, Officers responding to the scene located a vehicle near the intersections of Aspen Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard. The vehicle had run off the road and had impacted a block fence. Officers contacted the driver, a Hispanic male about 30 years of age, who had no signs of life. This male subject has been identified as Carlos Gallegos (25 years of age) formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Major Crimes Unit, consisting of members from the 9th Judicial District District Attorney’s Office, the Clovis Police Department, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, and the Portales Police Department began investigating the two suspected homicides. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the two crime scenes were connected, and the deaths were related.
David Lopez and Carlos Gallegos have been transferred to the Office of the Medical Investigator for autopsy.
The Clovis Police Department is continuing the investigation into these homicides. Additional updates will be provided about the case in the near future.
