Clovis –June 16, 2017–On Friday, June 16, 2017 at approximately 1:07 PM; Officers of the Clovis Police Department were dispatched to 508 Sheldon, for a gunshot victim. Upon arrival Officers encountered a female subject, later identified as Charity Helker (32 years of age), sitting on the curb in the front of the residence.
Ms. Helker was able to tell Officers she had gotten into an argument and altercation with her boyfriend, identified as Joshua C. Martinez (32 years of age). Ms. Helker told Officers she was struck by Martinez in the face and then he produced a black handgun. She stated to Officers she was trying to fend Martinez off when the gun went off striking her in the arm/wrist area. She then told Officers the gun was fired a second time and she was hit in the head.
Clovis Fire/EMS personnel transported Ms. Helker to Plains Regional Medical Center-Clovis for treatment. She has been taken to surgery for the gunshot wound to her head to remove the bullet from under her scalp.
Clovis Police Officers set a perimeter of the immediate area and a K-9 unit was called to the scene to try and locate Martinez. Officers were in the area trying to locate him and he was encountered in the 1000 block of Ross and taken into custody without further incident. Martinez already had arrest warrants from a previous incident on May 12, 2017 for: Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Assault Against a Household Member, Aggravated Assault Against a Household Member, Aggravated Battery Against a Household Member, Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Firearm or Destructive Device by a Felon and Burglary of a Vehicle. Martinez was booked into the Curry County Detention Center on this warrant and his bond is $50,000 cash only.
The investigation is being conducted by Clovis Police Department Special Operations unit.
