Shooting at/from MV – 4000 N. Prince – 07/18/2017

On Sunday, July 16, 2017, at approximately 11:59 p.m., Officers of the Clovis Police Department were dispatched to 4000 North Prince Street, Denny’s diner, in reference to shots fired. On arrival, Officers made contact with a 41 year old female who stated her 19 year old son had driven a truck to Denny’s at about 11:00 p.m. to pick her up from work. She stated her son had gone outside and she heard several loud bangs. She exited the business, went outside, and noticed her 2008 Dodge truck had been shot several times. The vehicle had sustained five bullet holes, and five bullet casings were recovered from the parking lot.
A Detective of the Clovis Police Department Special Operations Unit was dispatched to investigate this incident. The 19 year old male was transported to the Clovis Police Department for interview. During the course of the interview Jonathan Romero (22 years of age) was identified as the suspect in the shooting. The victim described Jonathan Romero leaning out of a white in color sport utility vehicle, firing the weapon over the vehicle.
Officers located the suspect vehicle in the 2100 block of East Grand Avenue at an apartment complex. The vehicle was secured for a search warrant and the owner, a female family member of Jonathan Romero, was interviewed stating she had driven Jonathan Romero to Denny’s diner where he spoke with someone and as they were driving away, he sat out of the passenger window of her car, firing a weapon several times. She also relayed that her children, ages 6 and 4, were in the car when Jonathan Romero fired the weapon.
An arrest warrant was generated for Jonathan Romero for Abuse of a Child (3rd degree felony), Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle (3rd degree felony), and Aggravated Assault (4th degree felony).
On Monday, July 18, 2017, at approximately 2:17 a.m., Officers patrolling the area of 7th Street and Jones observed a person who they believed to be Jonathan Romero. Officers checked out with the person, who identified himself as Jonathan Romero. Arrest warrants were confirmed for Romero, who was told he was under arrest. Jonathan Romero ran from officers and after a short foot chase was captured.
Jonathan Romero was transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center. Jonathan Romero’s outstanding arrest warrants were served.
