Clovis, NM – November 17, 2017 – On Friday, November 17, 2017, at about 8:46 a.m., Officers of the Clovis Police Department were dispatched to the 1200 block of Chama Street in reference to a violent domestic situation. On arrival, Officers contacted an adult female (27 years of age) and her infant daughter (11 months of age). The infant was bleeding profusely from wounds she had received when the suspect had thrown a glass jar, that encased a candle, at the mother and child. The candle impacted the infant’s head, severely injuring the infant. The infant was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center (PRMC) and was subsequently transported to a Lubbock area hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries. The child’s mother also received a head wound and she was treated and released from PRMC. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement. There was an additional infant (6 months old) in a small crib in the living room when the violence occurred.
Detectives of the Clovis Police Department Special Operations Unit were activated and are investigating this incident.
The suspect of the child abuse was identified as Jackie Lee Cubit Jr. (31 years of age). Cubit is a black male, who is approximately 5’08” tall, weighing about 209 pounds. Jackie Lee Cubit Jr. only recently moved to Clovis, New Mexico in August 2017, having moved from Lubbock, Texas.
An arrest warrant was generated for Jackie Lee Cubit Jr. for Abuse of a Child (1st degree felony), Abuse of a Child (3rd degree felony), and Aggravated Battery on a Household Member (3rd degree felony). Cubit is also wanted by Texas law enforcement for Domestic Assault and Parole Violation.
