On Thursday, April 26, 2018, at about 8:26 p.m., Officers of the Clovis Police Department and Clovis Fire Department Emergency Medical Services responded to the 100 block of West Tierra Blanca Road in reference to a suicidal subject. The caller reported that her husband, a 33 year old male, had locked himself in the home and was possibly suicidal.
On arrival to the scene, Officers noted the male, who was screaming, had barricaded himself in the home. As Officers approached the home they smelled the scent of natural gas emanating from the home. Clovis Fire Department personnel were able to shut off the gas to the residence.
Because of the escalating level of danger to the community, the Clovis Police Department Special Response Team, which is comprised of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) and the Crisis Negotiations Unit, were activated. SWAT Team members and the Negotiator tried to convince the subject to surrender. The subject, who had armed himself with various knives, would communicate intermittently, but would not comply.
After continued communication, the subject exited the home and surrendered at about 11:25 p.m. As he was being escorted to an awaiting ambulance, the subject began struggling with SWAT Team members and injured an Officer. The Officer’s injuries were not life threatening. Once the subject was under control he was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center for treatment.
