On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at about 9:36 a.m., an Officer was dispatched to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 921 Merriwether Street, Clovis, New Mexico, in reference to a report of arson. At about 1:43 a.m., a person entered the church, gathered bulletins and paper, and lit them on fire. The suspect also attempted to steal from a donation box in the church.
Video surveillance from inside of the church was relayed to Officers. Detectives and Officers were able to identify the subject committing the arson as Ricky Morse (22 years of age). Officers attempted to locate Morse but were unsuccessful.
At about 10:39 a.m., as this event was being reported, Clovis Police and Fire Departments responded to 919 Rencher Street in reference to a fire. This address is located across the street from Sacred Heart Church. The building is vacant and has no electricity. This incident is being investigated as arson. The investigation is ongoing and may be related to the arson at the church.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Ricky Morse on the charge of Negligent Arson of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. If anyone has information relative to these arsons or the whereabouts of Ricky Morse, please contact the Clovis Police Department.
