On Tuesday, June 19, at about 2:08 p.m., the Curry County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Clovis Police Department for assistance in locating Victor Apodaca (28 years of age), Aaron Clark (31 years of age), and Ricky Sena (24 years of age); escapees from the Curry County Adult Detention Center. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office had received an anonymous tip that the escapees were in a red brick apartment near the Clovis High School Freshman Academy, 1400 Cameo Street, in Clovis, New Mexico. Law Enforcement began their search for the escapees, ultimately checking an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Dartmouth Street.
A subject identified as Jon Hausman (38 years of age) and a 41 year old female were contacted behind an apartment. During contact Officers were able to verify the wanted escapees were in the apartment and that there was a firearm in the home. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office requested the Clovis Police Department SWAT Team, which was activated and deployed to the scene because of the danger posed to the community by the escapees. On the arrival of SWAT, negotiations with the escapees began. The Clovis Police Department coordinated with the New Mexico State Police for assistance in the SWAT activation, in the event the barricaded subject’s situation was prolonged.
At 4:58 p.m., Officers called out over the radio that shots had been fired. A subject from inside of the home pointed a firearm at SWAT Officers and SWAT Officers engaged the deadly threat.
Negotiations continued with the escapees. At about 6:00 p.m., the escapees relayed that they were removing barricades from the door and were going to exit the apartment, one person at a time. Beginning at 6:04 p.m., the escapees exited the apartment singularly; Victor Apodaca, followed by Ricky Sena, and finally Aaron Clark. All three persons were taken into custody without further action.
The Clovis Police Department executed a search warrant on the residence in reference to the aggravated assault against the SWAT Officers. A firearm was recovered. This investigation is active.
The Clovis Police Department wishes to extend its thanks to the citizens and law enforcement who aided the community in locating and capturing the escapees from the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
