Incident Type: Person Of Interest Sought For Interview In Homicide Investigation – 413 N. Sheldon Street, Clovis, NM - UPDATE

Clovis, NM – July 10, 2014 – On Monday, July 7, 2014, at approximately 12:20 PM, the Clovis Police Department responded to 413 N. Sheldon Street on a report of a dead body found in a vacant house bathroom. Upon the arrival of the patrol officers, itwas determined a Hispanic male, later identified as Jose Barrera, was victim of possible foul play due to blood around his head area. A preliminary finding by the NM Office of the Medical Investigator found the manner of death to be a Homicide. Investigators are not releasing the specific cause of death at this time due to on-going interviews of witnesses and possible suspects involved in the case, so specifics of the crime are being withheld.

Investigators need assistance in locating a person of interest in the Clovis area they would like to speak to about this homicide investigation. Investigators are attempting to locate 40 year-old Eric Valdez, also known as “SPANKY”, of Clovis. Eric “SPANKY” Valdez is described as a Hispanic male with Brown Hazel colored eyes, with or without glasses, a bald or close shaved head, approximately 5’-09” in height, weighing approximately 260 pounds, with a last known address of 608 N. Axtell Street here in Clovis, NM. Photos of Eric Valdez are attached to this release. Anybody with any knowledge of the whereabouts or how to contact this man are asked to contact the Clovis Police Department Dispatch at 575-769-1921 and ask to speak with a Detective or one of the members of the Major Crimes Unit.

The investigation is being conducted by member agencies of the 9th Judicial District Major Crimes Unit (MCU) consisting of the 9th Judicial District Attorney Office, Clovis Police Department, Curry County Sheriff’s Office, Portales Police Department and with assistance from the New Mexico State Police.

The investigation is on-going. There is no other information available for release at this time with the investigation being active.
