Clovis – July 12, 2014 – On Monday, July 7, 2014, at approximately 12:20 PM, the Clovis Police Department responded to 413 N. Sheldon Street on a report of a dead body found in a vacant house bathroom. Patrol officers found Jose Barrera, age 33, inside the home. Mr. Barrera is the victim of a gun-shot wound to the head.  The New Mexico Office of Medical Investigators provided a preliminary finding of homicide for Mr. Barrera.

The investigation, conducted by member agencies of the 9th Judicial District Major Crimes Unit (MCU), developed a time line of Mr. Barrera's activities before being discovered by officers. Several interviews were conducted, search warrants were completed and the investigation lead to the identity of Mr. Eric Valdez, also known as “SPANKY,” as the perpetrator of this crime.

Mr. Valdez was taken into custody on Friday, July 11th, 2014 at about 6:40 PM on an unrelated charge. Mr. Valdez was brought to the Clovis Police Station where he was interviewed by detectives. Mr. Valdez acknowledged his participation in the homicide of Mr. Barrera as the shooter. The motive for the homicide stemmed from a conflict between Mr. Barrera and Mr. Valdez involving Mr. Valdez's minor daughter.  Detectives  are continuing the investigation to provide greater detail to the motive.

An arrest warrant was completed and served on Mr. Valdez. He was charged with an open count of 1st Degree Murder and Tampering with Evidence.  Mr. Valdez has been booked into the Curry County Detention Center and his bond is $100,000.00 cash.
