NMDPS Physical Fitness Standards

Police Officer/ Non-Certified
Testing:
Applicants are notified by mail letter, email or telephone of the test dates. Testing consists of a physical fitness test and a four part written test. It is strongly suggested that potential police officer applicants review the physical fitness standards (located at the bottom of this page) and test themselves as to their current ability to pass all of the minimum requirements as the fitness test can be very challenging. Successful candidates will then be given a background packet to take home and complete. Applicants that successfully pass the background screening will be contacted for an interview and other required testing.

Police Officer/ Certified (New Mexico)

Must posses a valid New Mexico Department of Public Safety Police Officer Certification.

Testing:
Officers currently certified in New Mexico are not required to pass a physical fitness test. New Mexico Certified applicants will be given a background packet to take home and complete. Applicants that successfully pass the background screening will be contacted for an interview and other required testing.

Police Officer / Certified (Other States)

Must posses a valid Police Officer Certification from another state. Must be able to produce a training certificate showing hours attended at a basic law enforcement academy equal to or exceeding the current New Mexico requirement of 640 hours in order to qualify to attend the 2 week New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy’s Certification by Waiver Course.

It is an important area for performing police tasks involving stamina and endurance and to minimize the risk of cardiovascular problems. The score is in minutes and seconds

2. THE 300 METER RUN: is a timed measure for the strength of the legs

3. ONE (1) MINUTE PUSH-UP TEST: This is a measure of the fitness (strength and endurance) level of the muscle groups involved in the chest, upper arms and shoulder girdle.
