11/10/2022 – Barricaded Subject / SWAT Activation

On Thursday, November 10, 2022, at about 3:43 p.m., Clovis Police Department Dispatch received a 911 call from a person at 1121 Purdue Street in Clovis, New Mexico.  The caller stated he had been accused of molesting someone and said he wanted to be taken to jail.

On arrival, Officers contacted a male subject, Johnny Stonelake (47 years of age).  During contact Officers saw him holding a pistol.  Officers were told by other family members on scene that there were two female adolescents in the home with Johnny Stonelake.  During further conversation with the family members, they recalled he did have an “airsoft” pistol that was quite realistic, but they did not believe he had any actual firearms.  Family members also stated Johnny Stonelake had mental illness.  Clovis Police Department Dispatch also relayed information about two outstanding felony warrants for his arrest.

Officers on scene began talking to Johnny Stonelake through the front door, asking him to step out of the home with nothing in his hands.  Stonelake refused to comply and demanded Officers shoot him.  With the help of a family member, Officers were able to verify where the children were hiding in the home.  Officers were able to extract the children from a window and get them to a safe venue.

Based on the outstanding arrest warrants, the possibility of a firearm, and Johnny Stonelake’s mental issues, the Clovis Police Department SWAT Team was activated and deployed to the incident.  Once a search warrant was active, SWAT opened the front door of the home.  Johnny Stonelake immediately engaged SWAT Officers, brandishing what appeared to be a firearm, would point the weapon at Officers and seemed to be waiting to be shot.  The SWAT Entry Team was able to utilize a less lethal option against Johnny Stonelake, taking him into custody.  The weapon was later identified as a pellet gun.

Stonelake was taken into custody for outstanding arrest warrants for failure to comply with conditions of probation on original charges of criminal sexual contact of a minor (child under 14).
